Pros news

I would love the opportunity to play a friendly fourball with as many new members of the club as possible and indeed any member with whom I have never played. If you would like to join me on any of the following dates please click here.

Thursday, 21 January - 12pm
Friday, 5 February - 12pm
Friday, 12 February - 12pm
Friday, 26 February - 12pm

In my role as Chairman of The Surrey Professional Golfers' Association, I am running The Surrey PGA Annual Awards Dinner at Brooklands Museum preceded by a Pro-Am golf tournament at Hankley Common, Hindhead and Farnham Golf Clubs concurrently on Tuesday, 23 February. The golf will be a 12pm shotgun start with the dinner with a guest speaker at approx 7:30pm. This day is vital to the Surrey PGA as it raises funds to enable us to host a Surrey PGA Assistants and Trainees Championship amongst other things. The cost is £110pp for the Pro-Am and the dinner or £65pp for the dinner only and you can enter either individually or in teams of three. If there is a professional you would particularly like to play with you can request him otherwise we will allocate you one. I would love as many West Hill members to come and support and enjoy this day as possible. Please click here if you are interested.

Club news

Club CaptainCaptain's Drive-In

We had a fantastic gathering of over 150 members to support the Captains' Drive-In on Sunday, 20 December. Club Captain David AlvisLadies Captain Marjory Horsman and the Junior Captain Lawrence Courtney all hit great drives with the hickory driver and were greeted with a huge roar of approval from the gallery.

Here they are in action.

The Xmas Foresomes

The Xmas Foursomes shotgun event that morning was won by Julien Payne and Paul Prentice with an amazing 41 points. In second were Mike Coulson and John McKimmie with 39 points, pipping Gavin Cookman and Nigel O'Hagan on countback. However, as usual, the biggest cheer was reserved for The Malibu Kings (Ian Fraser and Ian Edwards) coming in last with 20 points. This year caused even more hilarity as Ian Fraser "kept it in the family" following his son Ben's last place for the Malibu, in the individual Stableford the previous week!

Here is a report from Brian Terry

JAmie Willis and The CaptainThe Captain's Roll-up on Wednesday, 23 December was played in glorious sunshine and the wind was not as strong as had been forecast. For the players to have had their post-match drinks on the terrace two days before Christmas is virtually unheard of. We had a good field of 23 with an extra two joining them for an outstanding lunch comprising a choice of steak suet pudding, pheasant, Guinea fowl or deep fried assorted fish (it's worthwhile joining us for the lunches alone!). This feast was only after we had been threatened with using up the leftovers from the fridge and freezer by having to eat turkey pate, turkey soup and cold turkey sandwiches.

Scoring was impressively high with Ian Edwards's 36 points not even getting him into the top five. Accordingly, all the leading positions were decided on countback with fourth and fifth needing to go down to the last three. In the end Jamie Willis won (pictured above), after a long-overdue return to the competition, with 38 points by just pipping George Fergusson, again on countback. The January roll-up will be held on Wednesday, 27th.

Shop news

After the Captains' Drive-In, 100 members enjoyed a fantastic Xmas lunch provided by Brenden, Tracy and the team. We then did the draw for the Professional's Xmas Draw and the lucky winner of the first prize of a Galvin Green GORE-TEX waterproof suit worth £380 was Paul Reeves (pictured below with Greg). Thanks to all your tremendous support we were able to have a fantastic prize table with prizes worth £2,300 as pictured here. For a list of all the lucky winners click here.

Competition results

Hogmanay Salver
Hogmanay Salver
The winners of the Hogmanay Salver with a score of 3 up were Alex Morrison and Rob Guilfoyle. And you guessed it, Alex has had a game improvement programme with Greg and Rob had also just had a putting tip, too!

Second on countback were Craig Kimber and Greg Craigen (Craig and Greg are also reaping the dividends of a game improvement programme) and third on countback were Tim Cleminson (playing with his new custom fitted Titleist driver) and Merfyn Roberts.

Ladies news

Threeball Texas Scramble

The ladies threeball Texas Scramble on 16th December was won by Julie Wilding, Karen Duncan and Sian Thomas with 72.1. Then Kay Bowman won the Ladies Weekend Christmas Cracker pipping Kathryn McKimmie on countback with 32 points. Jan Gilkes won best front nine with 19 points, and Elaine Watts the best back nine with 16 points. Then to finish a busy festive period, Janet Lea won the Weekday Stableford last week with 38 points (yes you guessed it - she's also been working on her swing with me!) second was Lynne Daniel with 35 points and third Kathryn McKimmie with 34 points. Well done, everyone!
