Ashley's Technology Corner Complete Driver Review - West Hill Golf Club

Titleist D2 & D3 -

With a pear profile the 915D2 delivers higher trajectory and more dynamic face closure versus 915D3. The wide sole channel and high speed face insert with a thick centre and thin perimeter delivers more distance on off-centre hits. Reduced thickness up front allows weight to be placed in the back, resulting in a low and deep CoG that provides ball speed, preserving forgiveness. A driver that myself and Greg personally use and recommend.

TaylorMade M1 & M2 -

The M1 & 2 have a multi-material construction - featuring an ultra-thin, ultra-light and high-strength carbon composite crown - that unlocks breakthroughs in distance, playability, and feel for all golfers. From my personal experience, these drivers have a lovely feeling when striking the centre of the clubface and a driver I would fully recommend for people seeking a higher ball flight.

Mizuno JPX EZ & JPX 850 -

With the JPX EZ there is now a second adjustable driver option for players who want MORE ball speed or those who want EXTRA stability from off centre strikes. Mizuno have professionals like Luke Donald and Daan Huizing who have put the JPX EZ into play on tour. Luke Donald felt more secure with the extra forgiveness - and he's a better driver than most of us!

The Swing Studio Custom Fitting

Stuart Kerr is the first West Hill Member to purchase the new TaylorMade M2 irons. A couple of weeks ago we looked to compare Stuart's PING G25 irons to all the others on offer from Mizuno, TaylorMade and Titleist.

We started with the Mizuno DNA fitting system to establish the best shaft and head design for Stuart. After trying all that was recommended we saw that the only iron that had a better average in distance and spin was the new TaylorMade M2 iron, with some shots up to 12 yards further with a 6 iron. Stuart liked the softer feel of the shot even if it wasn't the best strike and with the 'Reax' shaft there was more control.

If you'd like to compare your irons to all the new offerings click here to book an appointment.

Members news

Last weekend the Captain and pro were challenged by John McKimmie and Stephen Atkinson.

We thought we had control of the match as Mr McKimmie stood over a 15 foot putt to stay in the match on the 15th green.

However, he duly holed it and they then proceeded to win the next two holes to take the match up the last.

The professional holed a 15 footer on the last to apply the pressure but Mr Atkinson was up to it and holed a 4 footer to win the hole and seal the comeback for a halved match.

Last Friday I played a friendly fourball with new members Simon Calder, Rob Hetherington and Stephen Atkinson.

We had a great match with everyone playing very well and it's a great way for me to meet new members and find out how I can help them both to settle into West Hill and maybe with their golf too!!

Here is an introduction from Rob

"As a newly arrived "refugee" from Wentworth, I was delighted to play a round last Friday afternoon with two other (relatively) new members and Guy. We had a great match which went down the 18th, and in which Simon and Guy deservedly triumphed due to a very solid par from Simon. Guy has correctly diagnosed that my game is in need of some remediation and has promised to improve my short game in no time at all. My thanks to all members who have given me such a warm welcome in the last month, and I look forward to many happy future golfing experiences at West Hill."

I would like to play with any new members and with members with whom I have never played before. If you would like to join me in a friendly fourball on either Friday 18 March or Saturday 26th March click here. I am also looking for one more member to join me at the Hayling Pro/Am on Friday 13th May. This is a super links course and the cost is £110 of the pro/am with coffee and bacon roll, dinner afterwards, prizes and a free practice round before the day. Click here if you would like to join me.

Congratulations to Ed Shanley who won the weekend Stableford with 37 points. Ed is on a sabbatical from work and has been using his time well to work on swing improvements we made last year and his handicap is coming down fast. Paul Prentice, who was playing with his new custom fitted Titleist fairway wood and hybrid as reported last week, came second in Div 1 with 36 points and Rowan Gillespie third with 35 points playing with his new Mizuno MP4 blades. Andrew Smith won Division 2 with 36 points, Chris S, was second with 35 pts beating Simon Calder into third on countback.

Here is a report from Brian Terry

'Competitors in the Captain's Roll-up on 24th February had to contend with a heavy frost for much of the round. Notwithstanding this the leader board showed that some excellent golf was played. The winner was Merfyn Roberts with 40 points, followed by Kamran Etebar with 37 and Simon Legge on 36. For four of the top five this was the first time they had scored eclectic points in the annual competition so more players have put themselves in contention. Neil Blick continues to lead, though, closely followed by George Ferguson. The next competition will be played on 23rd March when the ladies will play with the men although each will play their own, separate event. Entries may be made via the website or by writing names on the start sheet.'

As you can see West Hill tourists can be currently found struggling with the weather at Erinvale in Somerset West near Cape Town.

My guess is that Messrs Young and Parrington had a pre-arranged game with Erinvale member, Keith Trenter, and bumped into Dr Sellars whilst enjoying some Pinotage at a local????

Assistants news

Ryan's News:

In July of last year I very sadly lost my Grandpa to lung cancer and during his treatment he and our family received a tremendous amount of care and support from The Royal Marsden in Sutton. To show our support for everything they did, I along with my Dad, Auntie, Uncle and Cousin will be completing the Marsden March on Sunday 13th March which is a 14 mile walk between the Royal Marsden Hospitals in Chelsea and Sutton to raise money to help fund the great work they do for cancer patients. After we had completed the walk last year, Grandpa was one of the first people to congratulate us and he commented that he hoped he would do the next one with us. Whilst we didn't quite expect him to do it we never thought he wouldn't be here with us, so this year we're doing it for him.

The Royal Marsden does amazing work for those that unfortunately have to go through the suffering of cancer and are pioneers in developing new treatments so that more people can survive and get the all clear from the disease. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity has become very close to our hearts and it would be fantastic to raise as much money as possible to show our support for what they do. Here is the link for our fundraising page and any donations would be greatly appreciated.

ECCO

We do like a bit of visual technology - and that's exactly what you get with these new shoes. However, the 'cage' isn't just for show, you just have to try a pair on. Not only are they extremely comfortable, something you always get from ECCO, but they feel great through the swing.
