Tour Club Count
Greg and I enjoyed doing the Tour Club Count where we analysed what was in every member's bag before they teed off in the Ferney Cup Qualifier last week. We were able to help explain to several members where an unbalanced set of clubs could lead to unwelcome yardage gaps in their bags.
If you would like us to check your club breakdown just pop into the pro shop with your clubs or click here.

Greg Works His Magic
A custom fitting report from Greg:
"Last week Hugo came for a fitting to see if there was a better Hybrid & Fairway than he currently used. We started by seeing what distances he hit his 3 & 4 iron, Hybrid & 4 wood.We found that the distance difference between the 4 iron & 4 wood was only just over 23 yards so we set to work to find some extra yards. We started with the Hybrid's from Taylor Made, Titleist & Mizuno, by changing shafts & lofts we found some extra yards. This came in the form of the new Titleist H1 Hybrid 21* which went 15 yards further than Hugo's previous Hybrid.
Next up, the fairways. We established that a higher lofted club helped Hugo to get more distance, the result being an increase of 15 yards with the Titleist 915F 16.5* which now gives Hugo a yardage difference of 35 yards between his 4 iron & fairway wood. If you would like to compare the latest technology against your current clubs click here or call the shop on 01483 473172.
Happy golfing Greg."
Battle On The Hill
Last Friday I played golf with new member, Chris Archer. He played very well and receiving 7 shots he beat me up the last! Here is an introduction from him:
"Having lived and worked in London for the last 15 years I moved to Ascot last year. After the move, one of the first things I did was look for a local golf club. I fell in love with West Hill and was lucky enough to join just before Christmas. Unfortunately I haven't had much chance to play since I joined but I'm very much looking forward to getting out there in the coming months. I started playing golf as a youngster and joined Ellesborough golf club in Buckinghamshire at 8 years old! For the last 20 years I have been a member of the Oxfordshire and currently play off a 5 handicap. I'm very much looking forward to the next chapter in my golfing life here at West Hill and I look forward to meeting the members and making new friends. I intend to enter a few club competitions this year so I'm sure you will see me out there soon. "
Please introduce yourselves to Chris and give him a warm West Hill welcome.
The Body & Mind
On Monday night we had The Body & Mind In Golf Evening with Mary Mackay which was organised by Kaj Abrahamsen. Mary talked about warming up, cooling down, flexibility, mobility, balance and hydration and I talked about using the left and right brain to develop an improved pre shot routine for better focus, concentration and positive thinking.
The 40 members and guests who enjoyed the evening will now be invited to attend 15 minute personal assessments on the practice range, with myself and Mary, to check whether their personal range of mobility affects their golf swing technique.
West Hill v Granville
Here is a report from Terry Atkinson
"An annual friendly match against the Golf de Granville has been played since 2011 and the latest one took place on April 20th and 21st on the wonderful links course at Granville in the south west corner of Normandy. The course was in splendid condition despite little or no rain there in recent months. The players in the fourball matches teed off with winds gusting up to 40mph. This might have been expected to favour the home side who are used to such conditions but, in fact, West Hill won all four matches.
A splendid lunch prepared by the clubhouse chef, Alain Duval, featured skate wings as the main course washed down with generous helpings of Chardonnay and Calvados. The afternoon foursomes again saw West Hill come out on top by a score of 2½ to 1½. The next day was played in much calmer conditions and West Hill again came out on top by 6½to 3½ to give a final match score of 13 to 5. A first ever victory for the away team in one of these matches and so West Hill retained the Terry Cup which will next be played for at West Hill in October 2016.
Star players were Donald Leggett with 3 wins out of 3 plus victory in the individual stableford at Dinard Golf Club, Terry Atkinson (team captain and organiser) also with 3 wins out of 3 and Neil Blick with 2 wins out of 2. Also in the West Hill team were Peter Robinson, Tom Keelan, Simon Legge, John Todd, Andrew McNaught, Stuart Bosley and Philip Harrisson. The President of Granville, Patrice Adam, presented us with a copy of the centenary book which is in French and English and will be available to peruse in the Bedser bar."
Mixed Greensomes
Well done to Kevin and Tina Thomas who won the 14 hole golf and supper Mixed Greensomes on Friday evening with 32 points. Second were Gwyn and Stephanie Davies with 30 points.
The Ladies Are Laughing
Congrats to Ladies' Captain, Marjory Horsman, who won the weekday Stableford with 36 points. Second was Janet Lea with 34 points and third, Helen Atkinson with 33 points. Then at the weekend Kay Bowman won with 36 points, Karen Johnson was second with 35 points and Heather Thwaites third with 32 points.
Well done Kay who's handicap is reduced from 4.7 to 4.5 - good luck next competition Kay!
An Intense Match
On Saturday we played a Captain & Pro Challenge against young guns, Josh Atkins and James Elliot. After lots of missed puts we found ourselves 4 down through 8 but battled back to be 2 down playing the last.
As you know the pair who beat us by the biggest margin of the year win two days with us at Saunton Sands Golf Club with overnight accommodation with the compliments of the Captain. As Peter Oakes and Jimmy Sweetzer are currently leading with a score of 3 up, I'm sure they will be very interested in watching the video below of James Elliot over a 5 foot putt on the final green which he needed to make to win 3 up and tie them at the top of the leaderboard!
