Even more exciting news!!! Matthew Fitzpatrick, who I announced two weeks ago is competing in The West Hill Pro/Am in two weeks' time, won the European Tour Event this week, The Nordea Masters. And following his 7th place finish at The Masters in April, this win climbs him to No 32 in the World Rankings and he's still only 21 years old.

If you would like to watch him in action at West Hill please feel free to come and spectate on the day (Friday 24 June he is teeing off at 13.45). We also desperately need volunteers that day to help with the leaderboard and ball spotting so if you would like to help out for a couple of hours please click here.




Paul Prentice came for some early season coaching and made some immediate improvements to his strike of the ball and reduced the amount of draw on the ball. 

Look in the right hand picture his body is arched back behind the ball causing a slightly "scoopy" impact position. Within a few minutes we had his body much more over the ball and driving through with a much more consistent and powerful strike (left picture). Congratulations to our Club Captain, David Alvis, on a fantastic Captain's Day. He treated all 108 competitors to a new pair of short white socks, a Captain's Day Titleist Pro V1 golf ball and a much needed drink at the hut in the afternoon as well as a fantastic prize table for the winners. 

  

Winners of the day with 68 points were Kevin Young and Warwick Taylor (playing with his newly custom fitted Mizuno MP25 irons!) Second were Julian Hodnett and Raj Dadlani with 67 points with Keith Stanley and Chris Smith third on countback.

     

The morning winners were Mark Davies (following his recent putting lesson) and new member Martin Burns with 36 points. The afternoon was won by Mark Turner and Alan Arscott. The Captain also gave a special prize to the members who removed the most pine saplings from the Heather during the day. Jon Yates who was unable to play due to a cycling injury, but still came along to support the day, removed 440 saplings whilst Alastair Somerville, who removed the most whilst playing, is still on the patio counting his as seen below!!!!

The Beat the Pro Challenge was great fun and my announcement at lunchtime that Ashley had lost £250 in vouchers to members on the 13th and I had lost more (£265) in vouchers on the 4th was met with a huge roar from everyone. As was the replay of the Captain's swing which we played back in slow motion on the big screen along with all the other competitors swings. 

Shot of the day went to Justin Jones who is pictured hitting his tee shot on the 4th to 5 feet - only to lose to the pro who hit it to 2 feet to save his money!!!

The West Hill Order of Merit for the Curzon Smith Armada Plate is now 5/8ths complete. Following the Buchanan Trophy, the Hogmanay Salver, the Easter Challenge Medal, the Ferney Cup Medal and The Tommy Martin Qualifier the leader on 27 points is Paul Reeves. Second is Tim Cleminson with 22 pts and third Martin Thomas on 15 points. However, with 15 pts available for a win and three events - The Willie Murray 7 club medal, the Jubilee Medal and the Presidents Cup still to go, any member could still win. The Willie Murray is on Sun 24 July.

Well done to Julien Payne who played in the West Surrey Pro /Am last Friday and finished second Playing with PGA professional Matt Rice from Purley Downs.

Stuart Bosley, John Gilkes and Kaj Abrahamsen played last week as a team (two best scores per hole to count) at the Hindhead Seniors Invitation. They finished 2nd with 72 points behind West Byfleet with 79. 

Well done West Hill!




Following overnight wind the massive oak tree to the left of the third hole on top of the bank lost its overhanging limbs. This massive branch took half of the greenkeeping team most of the day to clear away. Well done to Ben and his team who are doing such a great job with the course in fantastic condition.

Well done to Hilary Ashton who swept to victory in the weekday medal and Cathie Barclay Trophy with a nett 71. Second was Chris Elliott with nett 77 and third Rosemary Wallis with nett 78. 

At the weekend Lynne Daniel won the Stableford with 35 points, with Karen StJames second with 34 points and Heather Thwaites third with 32 points.
