Membership news

Below is a report from Peter Bellion about his experience of playing in one of the Trilby Tour events.

"I played at Hanbury Manor Golf which is a Marriott Hotel in Ware near Hertford for the Championship of Hertfordshire. There are several other regions as well played during the summer. At Hanbury there were 144 competitors played in 3 balls, stableford off three quarters handicap. I played off 10 and scored 35 points. Steve Thwaites was my caddie, you could not play without a caddie! From the 144 entrants the top 10 qualify for the Grand Final on the 31st August at Forest of Arden course in Warwickshire. Each Regional event had 10 qualifiers for the final. You will be pleased to hear my lesson with Guy lesson has paid off and I qualified for the final as one of the top 10 at Hanbury Manor! I believe there will be 90 playing in the Grand Final."

Club teams

West Hill beat Hayling at Blackmoor on Sunday 7 - 5 to reach the final of the Brokenhurst Stag. The competition is run by Brokenhurst Manor Golf club and the final is usually held there unless Brokenhurst are in the final. We play Blackmoor at Brokenhurst in the final on Sunday 4th September. The competition has been running since 1983 and was won by West Hill in 2008. The scratch team manager is Rowan Gillespie who was on holiday for the semi final! This team consisted of Callum Denham, Anthony Wysome, Max O'Hagan, Alex Paramor, Callum Mackay, Gerry Kennedy, James Elliot and Paul Champion. Well Done!

Junior golf

One of our juniors, Joseph Wood qualified for the English under 14 amateur (Reid Trophy) this year which was hosted by Porters Park Golf Club in Hertforshire. He was playing against 144 of the best under 14 golfers in Europe and proudly representing West Hill. After rounds of 76 + 73 he made the cut quite comfortably. Joseph then had a final round of 73 which finished him in 12th position. Congratulations Joe!

In Addition, last Friday the West Hill juniors won the Bedser Bowl playing Woking and Worplesdon juniors at Woking GC. Callum Denham, Jason Denham, Ben Whalley, Rio Mercer-Marsden, Freddy Wooster and Will Hewett played for the Team.

Captain pro challenge

On Friday the Captain and Pro were challenged by Julien Payne and Gavin Cookman. They played brilliantly, scoring 6 shots under their handicap to beat us on the 14th green. However, the captain and pro battled back valiantly and the captain holed a fantastic 8 footer on the last to finish 3 down which puts Julien and Gavin as joint leaders with Oakes and Sweetzer for the trip to Saunton Sands. If this remains the best winning score then they will have a sudden death playoff on the 18th hole, in front of the galleries at lunch time on Sunday 16 October after The Old Aldenhamians Salver. Our next challenge is from Philip Wiper and Julian Hodnett.

Staff news

Ashley's Technology Corner

As you all know, over the next few weeks we've got a lot of course maintenance going on at the club and what better time to revamp your set ready for when the course is looking good again? With the club being so quiet, think about bringing your equipment in to be assessed for loft and lie alterations and re-gripping! Myself and Greg have seen a surge of interest in the new CP2 Golf pride grips which offer maximum comfort and a slight sponge feeling under the fingers, protecting the hands from unwanted wear and tear! See the picture below for the full range of grips we have on selection.

Next week I'll be explaining how important it is to get your wedge gapping correct, especially when conditions are firm and it's a real struggle to stop the golf ball on the greens! We'll be going through all the different specialised wedges and the new technologies surrounding them. Why wait, call myself or Greg today and get your own personal wedge fitting/ gapping session, FREE!

There's always going to be an element of luck with any hole-in-one, but this is something else! Sadly for Thomas Bjørn, it won't go down as a competitive ace.. Still… worth a watch.

Luckiest ever hole-in-one?
