Last Thursday I had a game with new members Stuart Kerr and Andrew Straszewski as well as Gordon Harris. Gordon and I were three up with four to play but Stuart and Andrew hit back with four net birdies including Andrews' 45 foot putt at the last to snatch victory from us in a terrific comeback.
Here is some info from Stuart. "I am married with Three children and have run my own fire & Flood Restoration company since 1992. I live in Sunningdale which is local to West Hill and was previously a member at Fox Hills. I have been playing casual golf for around 15 years and I am now looking to get a bit more involved in playing golf and getting an official handicap so I've joined West Hill .I've been a member of West Hill for two weeks and have been invited to play with a few members and Guy the Pro. Thanks to the committee and Guy where I have enjoyed the golf and company of the members who have made me very welcome in the club." Andrew said "On the first tee - having very kindly arranged for the rain to go away for the rest of the day - Guy showed us how it should be done, but the game still went to the last all square. One cheeky putt later we had a win!"
Please introduce yourselves to Andrew and Stuart with a warm West Hill welcome and invite them to join you for a game.
Then on Sunday I played with two more members for the first time, Billy Sutcliffe and John Wright, as well as newsletter celebrity, Mike Graves.
"My Billy" played awesome golf as he won us the breakfast by being 3 up at the hut and then the beers too with a 4&3 win over Mike and John. If you decide to have a game with these Guys either bring plenty of banter along with you or as Lee Trevino once said to Tony Jacklin on the first hole of a match " You don't have to talk Tony, just listen!". Click here if you would like to join me for a friendly fourball this season.
Congratulations to Bob Douglas who won the Club Stableford last week with 41 points. Second in Division 1 was Alan Rines with 37 pts with Julian Thomas, fresh from some coaching, third on countback.
Bob was on tour at Turnberry and Troon with West Hill members Iain Purves and Jason McGibbon in a Ryder Cup style match against the Americans. They asked me to kit them out in matching Galvin Green uniform with the "Baron Cup" logo and their names under the Scottish flag on each jumper and cap.
Despite looking great they were defeated by some dubious American handicaps but will look for revenge on American soil in two years time.
In Division 2, Dan Atkinson stormed away with 40 points with David Jones second with 33 points and Matt Heather third on countback. The Seniors also had their first major of the year on Monday, The Frank Williams Stableford. Philip Ryman stormed to victory with 39 points with two blobs! Neil Blick was second with 36pts and Gordon Harris third with 35 ( fresh from some recent swing and pitching coaching!!!!)
Well done to West Hill A Surrey Fives team Paul Champion, Mark Randall, Daryl Ware, David Brown and Tim Christopher who beat The RAC Club away by 3 matches to 2 in the 3rd round. They now play either Hampton Court Palace or West Surrey at home in round 4. Hopefully we'll get a team photo with them looking very smart in the new West Hill Team uniform in round 4!!!!
I have an apology to make to The Captain from last week's newsletter. Having received a photo of the Captain and Maurice Hazzard with the claret jug at the Captain's Roll Up last week but no information about scores, I assumed that The Captain was handing the claret jug to Maurice. However, the newsletter arrived in Korea from where Maurice advised me that he was in fact passing the trophy to The Captain. So congratulations to the Captain and please don't take this as a lack of belief in your ability with the next Captain/Pro challenge match approaching!
Well done to Janet Lea and Marjory Horsman who won the Coronation Foursomes with 37 points last Wednesday. Their score will be submitted and we will wait to hear if it is good enough to qualify for the area finals. Second were Sylvia Sands and Dee Griffiths with 34 points and third Janet James and Rosemary Wallis with 33 points. In the medal on Saturday well done to Kathryn McKimmie won with net 77, with Cilla Shaw second with net 80 and Shirley Couzens third with net 81.
