Last week James Elliot became the first West Hill member to become the proud owner of a set of the new Mizuno JPX900 Tour irons.
Fitted with the new Dynamic Gold AMT shafts we managed to get James a few more yards but more importantly we increased the consistency of his ball flight, spin and trajectory. As well as an awesome feel off the face they look great in the bag.
If you would like to try any of the latest technology click here for a session or call the Pro shop on 01483 473172.
Happy golfing Greg.
Last Thursday I played with new members Steve Weait and Gwyn Davies, and Alastair Somerville who has been a member for 45 years but we have never played together before. We had great fun and a very competitive match going to the last putt on the last green and not a single bogey in fourball Betterball. If any member would like to join me in a friendly fourball on Friday 11 November at 12.00 please click here.
Here is an introduction from new member, Gwyn Davies.
"My wife, Stephanie, and I are recent arrivals at West Hill, where we have received a very warm welcome from everyone we've met so far. I've only been playing golf for four years (someone told me they hadn't played in daylight for the first three years in case anyone saw them). I was a member at Clandon Regis, which is good, but West Hill's course is a whole new challenge (and it has great food and wine too!). As for my sporting history, when you have Welsh origins rugby is hardwired but sadly in the past. However, I still play a lot of badminton and squash, I love to ski, and despite the advancing years I am a springboard diver. Recently retired, playing music is also a big part of my life. Hoping to get the handicap down soon."
We had a fantastic member's day out to Sunningdale on Tuesday with 24 members participating. The weather was fantastic and both the Old and the New courses were in amazing condition. Gerry Kennedy said the highlight of the day was getting Nick Cobb to buy the wine at lunch. Everyone played fourball Betterball with different partners for morning and afternoon but adding their two scores together to give individual winners.

On Tuesday 6 December I have arranged our annual member's day out to Open Championship venue Royal St. Georges, Sandwich. We have very favourable tee times between 10 and 10.30 so not too early an alarm call! The cost is £120 for 18 holes, prizes, amazing 3 course lunch, coffee and bacon rolls. I am limited to 30 places so click here to join us for a great member's day out.
Our second to last match was a steak and claret challenge against Richard Bolton, Ferney Cup winner, and Paul Champion, Silver Medal winner. In a topsy turvy game we went from 3 down to 1 up with three to play, to one down playing the last with the Pro holing a 3 footer to square the match. As I write we play the last match today against Mike Coulson and Mark Davies.
In 'The Race to Saunton', Oakes & Sweetzer and Payne & Cookman are tied for the lead at 3 up, so if that is not beaten today there will be a sudden death playoff over 2 holes ( 1 & 18 ) on Sunday at approx 1.15 to 1.30 tee off.
Here is a report from Terry Atkinson.
"A team from the Golf de Granville, Normandy, and France were at West Hill recently for a friendly match against a group of West Hill members. The match is played in Ryder Cup format with foursomes, four balls and singles. Although many of the matches were close the French team managed only one victory when Georges Ravenel pipped Peter Robinson by finishing birdie / par. So the final score was West Hill 15 Granville 1. As West Hill had also won the away match in France in April, the Terry Cup was retained. Despite their defeat, the visitors were full of praise for the 'impeccable' condition of the golf course. The match is already scheduled for next year with the away leg in the first week of April and the return at West Hill in the first week of October. This timing seems to suit the two courses as the links course at Granville is in top condition in early spring.
West Hill members were Terry Atkinson (captain), Neil Blick, Andrew McNaught, Tom Keelan, Philip Harrisson, Simon Legge, Donald Leggett, Peter Robinson and Stuart Bosley.
Anyone passing through southern Normandy would be well advised to play a round at the Granville links course which was designed by Harry Colt and which has hosted many national championship events. The club published a book to mark its centenary in 2012 and this can be consulted in the Bedser bar - it's in English and French!"
The ladies Centenary Foursomes tournament was concluded at Effingham Golf Club this year to which West Hill won by having two of our own teams in the final! Congratulations to Sian Thomas & Liz Hooper who won the tournament ahead of Cilla Shaw and her daughter Natasha Cheeseman in a very closely contest. Well done to both teams who played brilliantly well.
Very well done also to the winners and finalists of these recently completed competitions.
