Club Fitting Report From Patrick
A couple of weeks ago Sue Gorvin asked if we could have a session on the flight scope with the view to add some distance to her drives and to also find a 5 wood that works better than her current model. Sue currently has a Tour edge Bazooka 3 wood which she hits well so it made sense to try the 5 wood in that model initially and straight away Sue was splitting the middle of the fairway and couldn't miss the centre of the clubface, we tried TaylorMade's equivalent but nothing came close to the Tour Edge for Sue.
The next port of call was to see if we could eke a few extra yards out of the driver, Sue's current model was a 12 degree Tour Edge Bazooka driver which like the fairway woods Sue struck very consistently but felt there wasn't enough roll on the ball upon landing and at times felt the 3 wood could go just as far. The flight scope confirmed what Sue was saying by showing a launch angle of 10 degrees and a spin rate of around 4000 RPM with neither of these statistics conducive to hitting her maximum distance, step in once again TaylorMade's SLDR driver with its mega low spin rates and money back guarantee if you don't love the new distance (I'm sure you've seen the adverts between the televised golf!)
I ordered in a 14 degree SLDR driver head for us to trial against Sue's current model and yet again the results were astonishing, Sue's current model was carrying on average 95-100 yards with a total distance of 135 yards but with a bit more loft we jumped the carry up to 115-120 and a total distance of 165 yards! that's another "LOFT UP" gain of 30 yards, this was pleasing as TaylorMade recently gave me the honour of being one of their brand ambassadors so it's great that their product keeps performing so admirably and I don't have to dress it up in the slightest! I hope you love your new distance Sue.
Well done to Callum Mackay who, fresh back from college in America, scored 39 points off 1 handicap to win the Whitsun Cup. Second in division 1 was in form Bob Douglas with 37 points and third Alan Rines with 36 points. In Division 2 John Scurlock-Davies, who was fresh from match managing our first ever club match against Bearwood Lakes, won division 2 with 37 points. Raj Dadlani was second with 33 points with Fergus Mooney 3rd on countback.
The course stood up to constant heavy rain all day with barely any puddles appearing and the greens remaining very firm - a great testament to all the hard work and maintenance Ben and his team have done. Fergus Mooney will also tell you that his result was partly due to the professional persuading him that a trolley with an umbrella holder to keep everything permanently dry is worth at least four or five shots on a day like that - and he is now enjoying the Sun Mountain 4 wheel Micro Cart with umbrella holder included!!!!
In the Surrey Seniors Salver we had a victory in this KO tournament beating Hampton Court Palace away by 3 1/2 to 1 1/2. The winning match was Rob Pike and Stuart Bosley who clinched the 3rd point with a 19th hole win thanks to Stuart's birdie 3 net eagle 2!
Last Friday I played with West Hill members Mark Turner and Joe McQuaid at the Hampton Court Palace Pro/Am with one of their work colleagues, Bob Sissen. On a very wet, windy and cold day we shot a team score of 6 under to just miss the prizes and I shot level par 71 to win last place money.
The ladies were very lucky with the weather for their Spring Meeting on Wednesday 21st May. All the gross & net scores are on the website. The Scratch prize was won by Kay Bowman with a gross 77, well done Kay. Rosemary Wallis won the morning medal with a net 71 in division 1. Shirley Couzens had a phenomenal day, winning the morning medal with a net 68, lowering her handicap by two shots to 25, going on to take the Barclay Cup and the Spring Challenge cup. The 13 hole afternoon foursomes was won by Liz Hooper & Jenny Ross with 27 points, second were Cilla Shaw & Sue Gorvin with 24 points & Shirley Couzens & Jackie Tenniswood also with 24 points on count back.
