Half of the time slots have been taken at our Flightscope evening from 4pm to 8pm on Friday 20 June. If you would like to come and try out the latest technology and compare it directly to your own equipment with the aid of a radar ball tracking device then click here to reserve your time.
On the same day we have a Ball Fitting Evening run by Bridgestone. Click here to reserve a 15 minute slot where you will find out exactly what type of construction ball is best for your game - again using the high tech data we get from a ball radar tracking device.
Congratulations to Max O'Hagan who finished 9th in the Surrey Amateur Championship qualifying at Kingswood and Surrey Downs with rounds of 70 and 73 for level par. The top 16 qualify for the Matchplay stages and Max narrowly lost 1 down in the first round. We had 5 other West Hill entrants, which is the most for many years and great to see. Callum Mackay finished tied 16th and was in a 7 man play off for one spot and unfortunately didn't get through. Also playing were Jonathan Holden, Michael Watts, Andrew Dusek and Stuart Mackie.
Congratulations to Philip Harrisson who won the Captain's Roll Up last Wednesday. The members playing were then treated to a beautiful steak cooked by Brenden. If you would like to enjoy a very social but competitive day, the next Captain's Roll Up is on Wednesday 18 June.
Well done to Ian Edwards & John Sawford who won the Tommy Martin Qualifier with 37 points. Ian recently booked an hour with me where we hit clubs through his whole bag using the Flightscope to analyze his yardages with each club. We were then able to work on a simple thought to improve strike in the long clubs to improve the yardage gaps between each club. Second were Mark Randall & Paul Champion with 35 points and third Paul Hanley & Warwick Taylor with 34 points.
The other qualifiers for the Matchplay were
4th Greg Gould & Andrew McNaught 34
5th Alan Thorniley & Peter Tiner 34
6th Tim Osborn & Andrew Smith 34
7th Adrian Cotton & Philip Harrisson 34
8th Edward Shanley & Andrew Tyler 34
9th John Pittard & Anthony Wysome 33
10th Simon Mead & Paul Prentice 33
11th Alan Rines & Alastair Somerville 33
12th Andy Fidgeon & John Wright 33
13th Michael Coulson & Jonathan Yates 32
14th Kevin Barkham & Fergus Gilmore 32
15th Howard Ashton & Barry Goss 32
16th Nicholas Millar & Anthony Mills.
On Saturday I played with lady members Julie Wilding, Heather Thwaites and Ilsa Bellion. We had a great game which was very close until I birdied 12 and 13 and then eagled 14 and then Heather holed a fantastic side winding putt on 15 to close out the match. Ilsa joined the club very recently with her husband Peter, so please introduce yourself to here when you see her at the club.
Well done to Barbara Brooks who won the weekend medal with a net 70 pipping Gloria Foxhall on countback. Kay Bowman was third with net 73.
The half term medals are a tough school. On Friday William Legge shot net 65 and only came third!!! Jason Denham was second with a net 64 with Jacob Chew winning on countback. Then on Sunday Jacob won again with a net 65, with James Connor second with net 67 and Harry Chew third on countback.
Sunday was a rare day off for my good self (still one more than Guy has had in the last 2 months!) and I was kindly invited for a four ball game from the 10th hole with Bill Longmuir, Mark Watts and Gary Pirson. Bill felt that as Gary has also been under the weather like I have been of late that it would be a good idea for the two "Cripples" to accompany one another, it seemed an astute plan as Gary and I started a run of holes from the 14th that better resembled farming than it did golf, only a miracle up and down from the Rhododendrons left of 18 off my knees kept us just the one down at the turn and clinging on to a faint hope that we might turn it around.
The back nine saw Gary play like a man possessed, after reluctantly taking use of a trolley at the turn and having to deal with flashbacks from his caddying days at Sunningdale where a particular gentleman requested Gary pull his trolley and carry what sounded like a revolting pipe around for him, we were back in the match. Bill and Mark continued to play very solid golf as the game became a cagey battle of who would blink first, our final hole the 9th proved the pivotal moment where a par from myself gave Gary and I the spoils in what was a thoroughly enjoyable mornings golf.
Gary as many of you may know is due to have surgery on his heart later this month and I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone by wishing him all the best and a very speedy recovery, hopefully it wont be too long before you are back pounding those long draws down the fairways Gary!
As if 18 holes of intense matchplay wasn't enough to quench my golfing thirst I joined Chris Harnett and Tom Passmore (who was on a very welcome return to West Hill after a business move to Hong Kong) for a few more holes in the afternoon. Tom and Chris were also settling a score in what was a riveting match where no player was ever more than one in front of the other until a defining moment aside the 18th green, with the match all square and Tom visiting the heather with his tee shot and then again on the approach, Chris was playing the hole in rather more eloquent fashion finding the fairway from the tee and then striking a fine fairway wood approach onto the front right apron of the green, it certainly looked like a win for Chris beckoned until Tom played a truly brilliant pitch from the right hand heather, the ball landing just onto the surface before releasing up the back tier and settling 4 feet from the hole. Chris also facing a very testing chip and run from the front could not muster the 4 and Tom tapped in for victory, great golf from you gents and a pleasure to watch first hand!
I'm very keen to play with as many members as possible this year so if anyone needs a 4th player on a Sunday morning or just wants to organise a game please pop your head round the door in the shop and it would be my pleasure to join you.
Also this week I participated in the PGA Southern Open at The Drift Golf Club, after a fast start with birdies at 2 and 5 I faced a 3 footer on the 6th to put me -3 and right in the mix, unfortunately my putter and I became somewhat detached from that particular moment and after spurning multiple opportunities with the flat stick I missed the cut by one shot with a score of +1. I have booked in for some counselling with said flat stick in a desperate bid to resolve our issues, I'll let you know how it goes!
You are probably thinking by this point that this is rather a lot of news for one week and it is so on a last note I'm away to Loch Lomond this week as a very fortunate and grateful guest of Alan Arscott, I will endeavour to take some photos of what is a beautiful part of the world to share with you next week but must remain focused on avoiding Britain's largest water hazard with my tee shots while trying to emulate Clifford's brilliant front nine of 6 under that he shot last year there powered by a tot (or three) of Scotland's finest malt Whisky!
