Titleist recently did a study using their robot to determine how often you should change your wedges due to the grooves wearing out and the results were fascinating. Using 3 Different Vokey wedges which had completed 125 rounds, 75 rounds and a brand new one. Hitting a 125 yard shot onto a perfectly flat green here are the results.

125 round wedge - 35 degree launch angle, 6500 rpm spin, 24 feet roll out
75 round wedge - 34 degree launch angle, 7770 rpm, 18 feet roll out
New wedge - 33 degree launch angle, 8500 rpm, 10 feet rollout.

Conclusion - after 75 rounds you will start to notice a significant drop in spin, stopping power and control, so if you play once a week on average then after 18 months you will see big improvements by replacing worn grooves - just like replacing your car tyres!

Coaching news

Jamie Potter had a great season last year winning the Tappit Hen and the Club Scratch Matchplay Championship. Look below at how you can continue to make big improvements in your game even when you are playing well.

In this session last week Jamie was hitting pull shots to the right. As you can see in the left hand picture his angle of attack into the ball was very steep causing this shot. By simply improving his turn in the backswing he started to return to the ball on a much shallower angle as seen in the right hand picture. The result instantly eliminated the pull shot. Studio news

Helen Simmons had an iron fitting last year, after getting used to the new yardages we needed to look at filling the gap between the longest iron and the Driver.

After trying out all the latest offerings the new Yonex hybrid and 5 wood did the job perfectly, so much so she beat her husband Paul a couple of days later.

If you would like a fitting session to test the latest technology or a gapping session to see how far you hit each club please click here.

Happy golfing, Greg.

Members news

Our course manager, Ben Edwards, and his team have worked incredibly hard again this winter, reshaping and re-draining many bunkers on the course. They are just completing the 17th hole now and then it will be time to focus on setting up the course for the season. Here is the fantastic improvement to the 13th.

Well done to Ryan Brignull and Joe Jenkins who won the Bedser Foursomes with 38 points last Weekend. Second were Robin Jackman and Alastair Somerville with 36 points, beating Paul Champion and Barry Goss on countback.
