Kevin's Custom Fitting

Last week Kevin came to see if we could find a hybrid and a 3 wood to replace his current clubs. We started by seeing how he hit these then went on to try the latest offerings from Titleist, Taylor Made and Mizuno. 

During the test we could see the Titleist and Taylor Made were performing to a similar level, but Kevin felt the Titleist gave him a better feel and more confidence, especially on an off centre strike.

Improve Your Game

Well done to Anne Abrahamsen who had a coaching session with me on Saturday and then went straight out and won the medal on Wednesday. And who says you get worse before you get better after a coaching session!

The sequence of Anne's swing was incorrect in that she was trying to turn in the backswing by using her legs. However, in the backswing the upper body should turn 90 degrees and the hips should only turn 45 degrees. By using her legs first they were reaching their full backswing position with the upper body only half turned. When golfers do this they have nothing left to turn so the second half of the backswing often becomes a lift of the arms and shoulders resulting in the weaker position you can see in the first picture.

 

We simply changed the sequence so that in the takeaway the turn of the club head, arms and chest eventually started to rotate and pull the hips into action with the knees resisting. This created a tight coil with the upper body coiled against the resistance of the legs as you can see in the second picture.

Hayling Pro/Am

On Friday I took Julien Payne, John Scurlock-Davies and Ed Shanley to the Hayling Pro/Am. Greg was also playing with a West Hill team of Richard Bolton, Rob Guilfoyle and Neil Blick. Unfortunately my team lost the side bet to Greg's team. I'll blame it on us not having a practice round and a curry the day before with Mr Bolton and company, rather than us struggling in the wind!

Dinner Trophy

The Dinner Trophy was once again a huge success with a very enjoyable dinner, an excellent speaker, and from the condition of competitors signing in on Sunday morning, I would guess the odd glass of wine!

Roger Pennington and new member, Robert Fowlds, both playing in the event for the first time, were victorious with 37 points and brought home £303 per unit in the Sweepstake! Second were Nick Clarke and the Captain thanks to their 2 for 5 points at the 16th and third - beating three other pairs on countback - were Gerry Kennedy and Richard Bolton.

Weekday Medal

Well done again to Kevin Parrington who won the Weekday Medal on Friday and was cut from 16 to 14. Jamie Potter also had net 67 with Barry Goss and Peter Yearsley scoring nett 68's.


 

Competition Results

As mentioned in coaching news, congratulations to Anne Abrahamsen who won the Midweek Medal with a nett 75 following her coaching session, beating Rosemary Wallis on countback with Karen Johnson third. 

The weekend stableford was won by Tina Thomas with 36 points. Lynne Daniel was second with 35 points and Ruth Mackay third with 32 points.
