The Evian Championship

Anna Nordqvist, who was made an honorary member of West Hill following her victory here in the 2005 British Girls Amateur Championship, has just taken another huge step forward in her career. After being the leading European point scorer in the Solheim Cup, she claimed her second major last week, winning the Evian Championship and is now ranked no 4 in the world.

Coaching news

Putting success

Julien Payne had a putting coaching session during the week and went on to win the Presidents Cup on Sunday.

Look at the big angle between his left arm and the putter shaft in the follow through. This is a sure sign that the wrists have been active in the stroke causing a "hit" of the ball. The other sign is that the putter head finishes very high off the ground. This was making Julien's distance control erratic as well as causing him to pull short putts to the left.

We developed a stroke with no independent hand action and better alignment which gave instantly better results as you will see below!

Competition news

Presidents Cup

Congratulations to Gavin Cookman & Julien Payne on winning the Presidents Cup, defeating Nick Chiverton & Sam Barkham 2&1 in the final on Sunday afternoon. And yes you guessed it, Julien really improved both his putting distance control and his holing out following a coaching session during the week.

A successful few days

Mark Randall also had a great weekend. First of all he won the Norris Foursomes on Sunday with Richard Bolton, scoring 36 points.

Then on Monday, in the ‘Beat the Pro’ challenge at the Captain's Charity Day, he made a hole in one at the 13th with a perfect shot which pitched 3 inches from the hole. And to top his day, he was then a Happy Hammer as he had his photo taken with Spark’s celebrity Sir Trevor Brooking.

In the Norris Foursomes, Anthony Mills and Alistair Wooster were second with 33 points, pipping Paul Prentice & Kevin Young on countback.

Well done to Club Champion James Elliot, Callum Denham and Joe Wood who represented West Hill and Surrey against 32 other County Club Champions at East Devon GC last week.

The event was won by Northumberland who were represented by the City of Newcastle GC.

Senior results

Congratulations to Barry Goss who defeated Howard Ashton to win the final of the Seniors FC Brown matchplay. Also congratulations goes to Ian McKinnon who won the Seniors FC Brown Stableford with 35 points.

Howard Ashton also scored his 7th hole in one at Sherwood Forest's 10th hole. He was away on "Timmy's Tour" which has been an annual tour arranged by Tim Osborn for many years.

Ladies Autumn Invitation

Unfortunately I have no results from the Autumn Invitation but I was chatting with Gina and her guests in the dining room at the end of the lunch and it sounded as if everyone had really enjoyed the golf course and an excellent lunch. We would love to have some regular photos of ladies collecting their trophies - who would like to volunteer to become my newsletter photographer?

The Captain’s Roll-up - 27th September

Six players scored 33 points so that the fourth and fifth positions on that score had to be decided on count back and the best scores of these all had 20 points on the back nine. However, Tim Rosenberg was the undisputed winner on 39 points followed by Gavin Cookson (after his triumph in the President’s Cup) second with 35 points and George Fergusson third with 34 points. These scores leave the eclectic competition on a knife edge with just one more event left in this year’s captaincy. Richard Bolton still leads with 21 points but George Fergusson has improved his position to 19 points. Ed Shanley and Tim Rosenberg each have 13 points. As both Richard and George have at least five counting scores Richard can improve his total only if he achieves first or second place next month and George needs to managed one of the same positions to improve his ranking.

The final competition in Kevin Young’s captaincy year is on 25th October when we hope as many members will attend so that we show our appreciation of Kevin’s enthusiastic and wholehearted commitment to the event throughout the year.’
