Recently, you may have seen a few requests in our weekly emails asking you to create your golfing profile or confirm your email address for GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) purposes.

As you might be aware, GDPR is new legislation coming into effect at the end of May, so we are taking the opportunity now to update your details. Not only does this give us the chance to confirm that we have your correct information, but it also provides us with the ability to personalise your weekly emails to suit your golfing preferences. The Masters

Well what a weekend of Masters golf, the course looked fantastic and the golf certainly lived up to it all. It was a fantastic charge from Spieth on the final day and almost again for Rickie Fowler. Rory MciIroy just couldn't get anything going on the final round and it was shame the great match versus Reed never really took off. I am sure he will be back fighting for the other majors this year. Well done to Patrick Reed for a great tournament win.

David's golfing update

Last Friday I played at Berkshire G.C in the Guildford Alliance, a 36 hole Foursomes Pro-Am winter event. It was a great day and the weather was finally sunny with no rain. I am delighted to say we won the event with 40 points on both the Red and Blue courses. I was really happy with the win and really how I played, considering the poor weather we have had this year and the lack of playing I have had. Hopefully after this week the weather looks to be improving and we all can get out and play more.

Surrey 5's

West Hill A’ beat Camberley Heath at Camberley to progress to the next round of the Surrey 5’s

Congratulations to Ali Campbell, Kevin Parrington, Jim Sweetzer and Mark Randall who shot a brilliant 3 over gross to ensure a 3&2 win and to secure a home draw in the next round against either West Byfleet or Windlesham.

This sees both of our teams progressing.

Surrey Ladies Championship

Last week West Hill hosted the Surrey Ladies County Championship which is played over 3 days of scratch medal and matchplay knockout. The competition commenced on Friday with a 36 hole scratch medal, with the top 16 from a field of 44 players qualifying for the knockout stages on Saturday and Sunday.

Ellen qualified in 16th place and met 1st place qualifier Katie Laud from Worplesdon (1 h/c) in the knockout. With on course support from West Hill members lifting her, Ellen battled back from 5 down to take the match to the 18th, but unfortunately she could only manage a half to lose 1 down.

By way of a consolation, she picked up the Keiller Cup which is awarded to the lowest nett score for the morning stroke play round and a nice early season 0.8 handicap cut. Despite the difficult conditions over recent weeks, the course received rave reviews from many players and praise was given all round to West Hill for the manner in which the event was managed.

No penalty

Golf can be a frustrating game at the best of times, but incurring a penalty stroke when you’ve accidentally done something wrong seems very unfair, especially when that one stroke could be the difference between getting a handicap cut or not.

Current Rules
Under the current Rules of Golf, if you accidentally nudge your ball while addressing it you incur a one-stroke penalty and must replace it (18-2). The only exception relates to if it is accidentally moved in the process of marking it. In this case, it must be replaced and there is no penalty (20-1).

New Rules from 2019
The new proposed rule (13.1c) states there will no longer be a penalty for accidentally causing your ball to move on the green and you must replace it on its original spot.
