Hello Golfers,

With this week being the start of course maintenance, Greg and David are busy rearranging the shop for the run in to the end of the season.

Ben and his team have been working hard since early Monday morning and have completed the hollow tinning of the tee's and greens, Ben hopes to have all the greens scarified by Thursday with a little more top dressing on Friday. Enjoy this week’s newsletter!

Captain & Pro Match

Last weekend The Captain and Pro were challenged by Gary Dickinson and Kevin McCarten, a very competitive match which went down to the last putt on the 18th with the Captain and Pro managing to win 1 up.

The Captain and Pro are still looking for challengers on the following dates:

Friday 7th September - PM
Friday 14th September - PM

Remember anyone who challenges us can play in the Captain Pro Finale on Saturday 6th October to decide the winner for the year.

Stinchcombe Match report

Last Thursday, West Hill played a match against Stinchcombe and it turned into a rather boozy balmy evening. Peter French of Stinchcombe in the first photo played in the inaugural match in 1974 and he still plays off 10 handicap. The match was organised by our Frank Denning and their Jack Jeffries who were both working on Concorde. The loser's trophy is a spoon made from Concorde titanium. This year that has gone back to Stinchcombe!

Jubilee Medal

Congratulations to Martin Oliver on winning the Jubilee Medal with a magnificent nett 62. The other results are as follows:

Congratulation to Jane & Ian Kimber on another win in this event, they managed 34 points over the 14 holes in greensomes format, both are having lessons with Greg and are beginning to pay off!

Groovy

When tour pros are playing in big events, like the PGA Championship this week, they’ll always have relatively new wedges in their bag to maximise their spin, because worn wedges mean less control.

Why do grooves matter?
The grooves are the sole contact point between your ball and the club, imparting backspin to help lift the ball into the air. R&D testing has revealed that after 125 rounds, wedges spin 2,000rpm less than wedges with new grooves and consequently roll 14 feet further on landing - which is huge.

What causes wear?
All grooves will wear slowly over time due to a number of factors, including gradual wear from play, but golf's equipment manufacturers work hard to limit this.

Need to upgrade?
Grooves are particularly important on wedges, where pinpoint control is crucial.
