Hello Golfers,

I hope you have all enjoyed a great year of golf in 2018. This amazing game continues to mystify, tease us, please us and drive us insane! I don't know about you but I'm already looking forward to trying to master it again next year!!!

We have already pre-booked all the amazing new equipment arriving from Callaway and TaylorMade coming out in February 2019 and we will have all the new custom fitting heads and shafts as soon as they become available. I look forward to telling you all about the new technology in January.

Xmas Shotgun Foursomes

On Sunday, 100 members played in the Xmas Shotgun Foursomes which was won by Dave Challis and Michael Fleming with 39 points. Second on countback were Bill Colvin and Chris Smith with Chris Harnett and Brian Morris third with 38 points. However, the biggest roar of the year went to the Malibu winners, Stephen Atkinson and Ian Fraser with a high low of 23 points!

Captain's Drive in

Following the Xmas Foursomes competition at 12.45 was the Captain's Drive in Ceremony. Congratulations to Freddy Wooster, the Junior's Captain, congratulations to Liz Hooper, Ladies' Captain and congratulations to Greg Mackay, Club Captain.

This was followed by an amazing Christmas Lunch prepared by Brenden and his team for 100 members. After lunch we played some fun games with Ilsa Bellion winning the mystery prize, Gwyn Davies winning heads or tails and Warwick Taylor winning the CARleveland Wedge playing Bruce Forsythe's "Play Your Cards Right!"

Last Friday I played with new member Jon Claffey. Here is an introduction from him:

“Hi I’m Jonathan, I’ve played golf locally with friends and business associates for a few years now and was previously a member of West Surrey Golf Course. I’m already very fond of West Hill, all the staff and members have been very welcoming. I try to play at least once a week, I’m enthusiastic to get involved in the competitions and I’m also looking forward to meeting existing members who I haven’t yet had the benefit of meeting."

Captain’s Roll Up - Report from Brian Terry

'Despite the heavy overnight rain, Ben and his team had the course in excellent playing conditions and this was reflected in the scores. A record 36 members signed up to play and, although there were a few 'no shows', 35 sat down to lunch. An even par 36 points was not good enough to feature in the top three scores as Chris Barber played his best competitive round since joining West Hill to return 42 points, Ian Kimber was second with 40 points and Stephen G. Lewis third with 39 points.'

The next Roll-up is on 30th January.

Setting yourself goals during the winter months is vitally important when it comes to improving your golf game. Yes, finding the time to get out and play is one part of the battle, but you also need to head to the range to work on the areas that let you down in 2018.

Whether you're looking to stop yourself from chipping out sideways after a stray drive, become the club's answer to Phil Mickelson by working on your short game, or simply want to know the exact yardages you hit each club, we can help.

Here's what to do: jot down three key areas that you want to improve this winter (like in the image above) and bring this to us in-store. We can then devise a winter coaching plan that'll help make these some of the strongest parts of your game.

Sand saviour

When you see your ball roll into a bunker, don't worry if you tend to get nervous about your next shot; it happens to a lot of golfers. It's one of the reasons that hearing TV commentators say "he'll be happy it's finished in the sand" is so frustrating.

Obviously, these players practice day-in and day-out and so their skills are naturally going to be at an extremely high level - Ben Crane led the way in 2018 with a 66% sand saves success rate.

So how do you get better? Well, alongside having a bunker lesson to ensure your technique is correct, using a wedge that is designed to make bunker play easier - such as Titleist's SM7 K-Grind - is key to getting up-and-down more often.
