The Race to Portugal...

We are now over half way through The Race to Portugal having played 15 matches. Last Friday was a real tester against Mark Randall and Kevin Barkham. In a tight match, the challengers were nearly always ahead and Mark made a solid nett birdie on 16 to go one up with the Pro missing from 4 feet for a half in birdie. The Pro then hit two 3 woods to 20 feet for a birdie on 17 to square the match. On 18, Kevin holed a downhill swinging 20 footer for a par only for the Captain to follow him in from 10 feet for a nett birdie to win the match and quieten down a very chirpy Mr Randall!

This week we play Messrs Forbes & Randall on Friday followed by Messrs Raven & Salmon on Sunday.

Ferney Cup Qualifier

Well done to Ben Turner who won the Ferney Cup Qualifier on Sunday with a terrific nett 64, pipping Race to Portugal leader, Paul Hendrick who shot a nett 65. The other 14 qualifiers for the matchplay are Tim Cleminson, John Todd, Gerry Kennedy, Richard Carlson, Clive Morgan, Justin Jones, Chris Smith, Ross Tonna-Barthet, David Jones, Jim Reid, Craig Doel, Robert Fowlds, Callum Denham and Peter J Robinson.

Staysure Trophy Qualifier

Congratulations also to the winner of the Staysure Trophy Qualifier, Craig Doel. This is the PGA National Pro/Am for the Over 50’s. Craig will represent West Hill with me in the South Region PGA Final at Foxhills in July.

Weekday Stableford

In a busy week, well done also to Andrew Smith who won the Weekday Stableford with an excellent 39 points with George Fergusson second in Division 2 with 36 points. A great score also from Mike Watts who scored 38 points off a 1 handicap to pip Clive Morgan by a shot in Division 1.

Ladies News

This weekend West Hill will be playing in the Derry Cup Final against Walton Heath at Croham Hurst. Ellen Yates, Kay Bowman and Jan Gilkes will be our representatives on Sunday but not forgetting Helen Atkinson, Chris Elliott, Kathryn McKimmie and Sian Thomas who all played, fought hard and won matches along the way to this scratch final. We wish them luck!

Well done to Janet Lea who won the Weekday Medal with a nett 72. Second was Helen Atkinson with nett 75, pipping Heather Thwaites on countback. Then on Saturday Jan Gilkes won the weekend medal with nett 78 with Liz Hooper second with nett 80.
