The Race to Portugal Last week the Captain and Pro had two challenges in The Race to Portugal. On Friday, we played Rob Pike and Phil Mulhall. In a very tightly contested game which swung to and fro, the Captain and Pro sneaked ahead and needed a par up the last to hold on to a one up lead. Then on Saturday we faced our biggest onslaught to date. I was giving Phil Edwards 6 shots, the Captain 8 shots and Ian Bain 10 shots. They started, 1st - nett birdie, 2nd - gross birdie, 3rd - nett birdie, 4th - nett birdie, 5th - gross birdie, 6th - nett par, 7th – par, 8th - nett birdie and 9th - gross birdie to be out in 27 and 5 up! Unbelievable golf! They stood on the final tee still 5up with Ian receiving a shot knowing that a 6 up victory would take them to the top of the leaderboard in the Race To Portugal. Ian hit two solid shots to the front fringe and with the pin on the back shelf, I hit my 6 iron approach to 18 feet. Ian putted to 15 feet and I then holed my birdie putt leaving Ian needing to hole to put them into the play offs. The putt for half slipped by so the win was 4up leaving Paul Hendrick & Clive Morgan, and Dave Roberts & Keith Turner currently top. If no one beats them, they will play off in sudden death up the 18th hole at lunch time immediately after The Buchanan Trophy on the Captain’s last day of his year.
