Lesson success
Member, Simon Cavey, is developing a more consistent swing and strike with some coaching sessions. In the left picture, it is very hard to see but the heel of the right thumb has come away from the left thumb and the swing is narrower and less coiled. In the right picture, by simply keeping the heel of the right thumb squeezed securely against the left thumb at the top of the backswing the left arm is more extended and the body is more coiled and loaded. Much stronger and more repeatable with one simple action. |

From Monday to Wednesday this week the Pro’s Team v The Ladies’ Captain’s Team battled it out in a three-day match based in Nottingham. After last year’s inaugural match being drawn 12-12 with every day halved 4-4 it promised to be a close affair.
Monday, Day One - played at the beautiful Sherwood Forest Golf Club ranked in the UK Top 100, the Ladies’ Captains’ team staged a remarkable comeback. Using the Golf Gamebook live scoring system on course the Pro’s Team were predicted a 6-2 win halfway through the day. But five matches on the trot went up the last hole with the Ladies’ Captain’s team winning 4.5 points of the 5 to secure a first-day win of 4.5 to 3.5 Tuesday, Day Two - torrential overnight rain and heavy rain forecast all day meant our day at the beautiful heathland golf course, Coxmoor Golf Club, was abandoned.
I managed to secure some tee times at the incredible Notts Golf Club (Holinwell) and 11 of our hardiest tourists battled it through constant rain to enjoy the 45th ranked course in GB&I.

Wednesday, Day Three - Played at former Ryder Cup venue, Lindrick Golf Club there were some very heavy heads after a long but excellent evening at an Italian restaurant in The Lace Market in Nottingham City Centre. The Ladies’ Captain’s Team got off to a great start and had a 6-2 lead mid-round. But three fantastic comebacks’ from behind from Alex & Sarah Langlands, Janet & Malcolm Lea and Greg & Ruth Mackay took it to the penultimate match still on the course. However, Roger Pennington & Chris Elliott held firm in a very tight match with Jane & Stephen Lewis to win on the last to score the winning point and give the Ladies’ Captain an 8.5 - 7.5 victory.
Well done Liz and to all your team, a great tour played in great spirit. |
Captain’s Roll-Up
Here is a report from Brian Terry.
“Despite the course having been closed on Tuesday due to the excessive rain, the September Captain's Roll-up was played on Wednesday, 25 September when the very wet bunkers were the only areas in less than perfect condition. Chris Harnett, playing in only his second Captain's Roll-up this year, scored 40 points so he was a comfortable winner.
Second, in only his first Roll-up, was new member Paul Sangster who played off six and scored 37 points. So, Julian Thomas's 36 points were just good enough to put him in third place. Well played all the competitors who made the leaderboard"

The Wednesday, 23 October Roll-up will be the last in Greg Mackay's captaincy so the eclectic competition will be a nail-biting affair. Leading the table at the moment is Tim Rosenberg on 15 points, followed by Chris Barber and Ian Kimber who each have 12 points, John Sawford on ten points and Matt Heather on nine points.' |
Stableford
Well done to Patrick Potter who won the Stableford on Sunday with a fantastic 40 points. Second in Division 2 was Tim Page with 38 points and third John Sawford with 37 points. New member, Gareth Evans, won Division 1 with 35 points pipping Paul Mayne and Paul Prentice on countback. |
Weekday Waltz
Well done to Jan Gilkes, Lynne Daniel and Tina Thomas who won the Weekday Waltz last week with 68 points. Second were Sian Thomas, Ruth Mackay and Claudia Johnson.

The popularity of Distance Measuring Devices (DMDs) has been growing for several years as golfers seek as much help as possible whilst out on the course. Our recent survey indicated that over 70% of you choose to use one, so we thought we'd highlight one of our favourites in this week's newsletter. |
| Garmin Approach S40 watch
|
|
GPS devices are not just about reading front, middle and back yardages. Well, in some cases they are, but not when it comes to Garmin’s Approach S40 watch. As we know, the course can be played several different ways and the Approach S40 displays distances to hazards and doglegs at a glance, which will prove vital when trying to take your course management to the next level.
|
In fact, at this time of the year when a wet course is a regular occurrence, knowing your yardages has never been more important. This is where the S40 comes into its own as it allows you to alter the pin's position on your watch so you can get highly accurate distances. Pretty clever stuff! We have a brilliant review video that you can view by clicking the link below. |
