Why would you stop?
Remember to put your clocks back one hour this Saturday night. Yes, it will be darker in the evenings but look at the positives: 1 - If you are wearing the right clothing the course is still playing perfectly with true greens that are staying firm and draining well after heavy rain. 2 - We have the best-covered practice range of any members club in Surrey with brand new Titleist range balls. Remember, every playing member is entitled to 12 free tokens a year so come and collect yours from the Pro Shop this week if you haven’t already. 3 - At this time of year you can see the most beautiful aspects of West Hill with the mist hanging mysteriously above the heather in the early mornings and the sun casting light and shadows through our Scotch Pines as well as giving them an amazing golden glow after sunrise and before sunset. Make sure you are ready to come and enjoy the most of late autumn and early winter on our amazing course.

Hard work pays off
Tim Rosenberg has been improving his golf with me this year and this week he won the Captain’s Roll Up Order of Merit as the most consistent golfer of the year.

This picture above from last week’s coaching session shows clearly a common fault of many golfers. In the effort to improve their turn, they twist the legs and hips too much in the takeaway (left picture) causing the weight to move back towards the centre of the body at the top of the backswing, resulting in a tilting action and a loss of power.
In the right picture, Tim has used the ground as well as his knees and thighs to create resistance in the backswing. The clubhead, arms and chest have eventually pulled the left hip and thigh across towards the right thigh as they create a circle around the spine. Tim is now in a powerful position to unwind from the legs through to a balanced finish.

This correct sequence of movement can work for everyone as your left leg will be pulled across as much as is dictated by your own personal range of movement. If you are less flexible your leg gets pulled across more which is fine. The point is that with correct sequencing it is pulled across rather than initiating the turn. Congratulations Greg Congratulations to Greg Mackay on a great year as Captain. Greg will be playing his 209th game as Captain in The Buchanan Trophy on Sunday and I’m sure all members join me in thanking him for his commitment and energy over the past year as well-wishing him a well-earned rest following the AGM on Sunday evening. |
Captain/Pro Challenge
On Friday, we played against new members, Tom Hague and Ed Middleton, who both joined two months ago. They had both just returned from a big two-day wedding in Oxford where Tom was best man and this, combined with lots of birdies from the Captain, led to an 8UP victory.

This week in The Race To Portugal we play match 29 on Thursday against Steve Weait and Gareth Evans and then the final match 30 against Mark Randall and John Sawford on Friday. The two pairs who currently lead on 5UP, Paul Hendrick & Clive Morgan and Keith Turner & Dave Roberts will be biting their nails as they wait. If they are not superseded the sudden-death playoff will commence on the 18th tee at 12.15pm/12.30pm on Sunday immediately after The Buchanan Trophy so please gather around the 18th green with your beers to give them a gallery. If the hole is halved, they will replay it as a par 3 until there is a winning pair. |
Short Cup Handicap & Willie Murray Cup 7
Congratulations to Stuart Johnstone who defeated Paul Hendrick in a fantastic Short Handicap Final. All square with two holes to play, Stuart finished birdie 4, par 4 for a 1UP victory shooting one over par for his round. Well done Stuart. Paul Hendrick, meanwhile, continued his run of form shooting a brilliant gross 68, nett 64 to win the Willie Murray Cup 7 Club Medal. Second in Division 1 was Richard Clancy and third Stuart Johnstone with nett 68s. Division 2 winner was Richard Bolton with nett 67 with Tim Cleminson and Alistair Campbell just behind.

Captain’s Roll-up report from Mike Phillips
“The last of Captain Greg’s Roll-ups was a great success. Some good scores in, despite the speed of the greens. This month’s winner was Neil Blick on 36 points just beating Gordon Young with a better back nine. The Eclectic winner was Tim Rosenberg. Not much can be said about the writer of this report, whose dress attire caused great hilarity.”
