Happy Hugo
Hugo Godfrey recently tried new iron technology with Greg in the Swing Studio. Using the FlightScope Launch Monitor technology, Greg identified that Hugo was not optimising his swing speed as the ball was launching at too low an angle and with too low a spin rate. With the new Titleist TS200 iron and a better-fitted shaft, he increased his launch angle and spin rate. The result - a better ball flight, an average of 8 yards further through the air and a Happy Hugo! Click here if you would like to compare your clubs against new technology in the Swing Studio or if you would like to try some demos on the course.

Huge changes to Gordon's game
Gordon Young recently started hitting some shanks on the course. His instinct, as is most peoples was to sit back away from the ball. However, the more your weight starts in your heels at set up, the more likely it is to move towards the balls of your feet during the swing as the body instinctively adjusts its balance. This has the result of pushing the hosel towards the ball causing more shanks. So, make sure you always start with the weight forward in the balls of your feet.
Once Gordon had done this, he was able to rotate his upper body much better in the backswing instead of lifting (look at how much more his back is to the target in the right picture). He was then able to use his legs to unwind through instead of hitting from the shoulders (look at the improved weight transfer in the throughswing in the right picture no 2). |

Captain & Pro Challenge
On Friday, we played our 4th Captain & Pro Challenge against Paul Mayne and Dominic Ellis. They were all fired up for revenge following a six-hole defeat last year and came out with all guns blazing, shooting a nett 61 in fourball betterball. The Captain also played great golf helping us to take the match to the last miraculously 1DN. The pro went for the birdie putt to try and halve the match and then missed the return putt leaving Paul with a 3-footer to secure a 2UP win and head the Captain/Pro Challenge Leaderboard for a spot in The Old Aldenhamians Salver. Well played Paul and Dominic.

Meet Neil Godfrey and John Neilson
On Sunday, I had a friendly game with two new members, Neil Godfrey and John Neilson. Here is an introduction from Neil Godfrey (on the left): |
| Neil Godfrey, the Pro and John Neilson |
"I recently joined West Hill GC given the reputation of the course and from hearing how friendly the club is too. Since arriving, the welcome from all club members and staff alike has been fantastic and is a real credit to the Club.
Whilst the day job in London keeps me away from the course Monday to Friday, I always am keen to play a round on the weekends - all year round. When not on the course, I try to enjoy watching the ‘ups and downs’ of West Ham’s journey around the bottom half of the Premier League, or out running with my partner Katie, and our Boxer Dog - “Bruno”."
|
|
Here is an introduction from John Neilson (on the right):
"I recently joined from Wimbledon Park, which is shortly expected to close. I am much enjoying the beauty of West Hill and the opportunity to play more consistently during the winter. I am Secretary of Imperial College in South Kensington and chair an international development charity USPG. I look forward to playing golf with other members, mainly in the afternoons at weekends, and to start playing bridge at West Hill too, though that may have to wait until I retire."
I'm sure you will join me in welcoming them when you see them at the club and maybe send them an email and invite them for a game.

Captain's Roll-up Report from Brian Terry
A good field welcomed George Fergusson for his first Roll-up as Captain and it turned out to be a very competitive event. John Sawford, having won twice in Greg’s year, again played excellently to return 38 points and take the trophy. He was closely followed by Rob Guilfoyle on 37 with Alistair Wooster on third with 36 points. Thanks go to Ben and his greenkeepers who allowed us to play in what were marginal conditions after so much rain. The December Roll-up will be just before Christmas on Wednesday, 18 December.’ |

Well done to Kay Bowman, Tracey Peryman and Anne Trew who won the 3Ball Texas Scramble last Wednesday shooting nett 67.5. In second place was Jane Kimber, Kathryn McKimmie and Tina Thomas with nett 69.6. Unlucky to our Pearson Cup Team who were defeated at home on Monday by Royal Mid Surrey. Let's have a bounce back in style in the next match ladies.

We've got a little task for you. Next time you're down the club on a busy day, have a look around and count how many golfers are using an electric trolley compared to those that aren't. We think the number might surprise you... |
Waterproofs. Mittens. Woolly hat. Golf at this time of the year requires the lot, which can make carrying your golf bag an absolute nightmare! However, utilising an electric trolley - like 66% of club golfers - allows you to pack your bag with everything you need and more without it weighing you down for 18 holes. One trolley we really like is the M-TECH from Motocaddy, which was released earlier this year and shows just how far electric trolleys have come.
Luxury polished chrome detailing, a super-lightweight design and an electronic parking brake are just three of its features that we love, but click the link below to view more.
