These figures were truly amazing
Look at the incredible figures below to show you the potential improvements that new technology can give you.
|
Nick Clarke was comparing his own Callaway X20 irons which he thinks he purchased in about 2008 against the new Titleist T300, the new Callaway Epic and the new TaylorMade P790. We tried them all in steel and graphite shafts and every club beat his own, but the clear winner was the Titleist T300 which is compared to his own club above.
As you can see Nick’s swing speed was 81.6 with his own club compared to 80.6 with the Titleist T300 and the spin rate was almost identical with both clubs at about 5600, as was the launch angle of the ball changing from 17.0 to 16.6 degrees. However, his ball speed shot up by an incredible 9mph from 103.2 to 112.1 mph with an increase in “Smash Factor” from 1.27 to 1.39. This showed that the new head and the new shaft were creating a much better ball strike and much more energy into the ball. The final result, an incredible 21 yards more distance with a swing speed which was actually, 1 mph slower. These figures were truly amazing.

Consistency is key
Alistair Hancock is getting more and more consistent as he improves his swing. Look at the huge difference this week as his backswing turn improves. In the left picture, his right leg has locked, and his left heel has lifted. Despite this excessive leg action in the backswing, he has ended up with a shorter backswing with less coil. In the right picture, his right knee has stayed flexed and his chest has continued to rotate. The result, despite less leg action, is a fuller backswing with better wrist hinge so he is able to unwind powerfully and strike the ball much better.

However, the clubhouse roof almost lifted with the roar as the Malibu King for 2019 was announced as Peter Oakes for a score somewhere between 16 and 18 points. Here he is pictured with the Captain and hiding The Malibu!

The Xmas Stableford was followed by The Family Christmas Lunch on Sunday with 100 members and their families enjoying a visit from a magician and then by Father Christmas and his Little Elf helped who arrived in their tinsel covered buggy.
Too much excitement, he and then proceeded to hand out a present to every child in attendance.

Meet the Members
Last Thursday I played with new members Jonathan Poole and Simon McCready. |
| Jonathan Poole, the Pro and Simon McCready |
Here is an intro from Simon McCready:
"Having worked abroad for a number of years I was very pleased to be able to join a golf club again this summer, and very quickly decided that I wanted to be a member at West Hill. I had a few friends from Wentworth (I was a member there for a dozen years, but the less said about what’s happened to that club the better) who had joined West Hill, and they were kind enough to propose me.
I managed not to embarrass myself in my introductory round with the Captain and Vice-Captain and was surprised and pleased to join as a full member. |
|
Since then I have been so impressed with all aspects of the club. The course is presented beautifully, all members I have met have been extremely friendly and welcoming, and the club is run really well and sensibly. I have nothing but praise, and that’s not just because Guy asked me to write this! I look forward to playing more and meeting as many members as possible." |
Here is an intro from Jonathan Poole:
“This summer we moved back to Kingston after five years on the Isle of Wight and I was delighted to be accepted as a member at West Hill. Both my previous clubs, Royal Wimbledon and Sandown and Shanklin, are mainly heathland and I have found West Hill to be a fantastic example of this type of course. In addition, the members have been welcoming and extremely helpful and I have even been selected to play in a number of the Seniors matches despite my all too frequent wayward drives and missed putts at crucial moments. Although retired I still work a couple of days a month and tend to only play midweek as weekends are taken up with family commitments and a lovely wife who still works full time. Whilst I have started playing regularly with a group on Mondays and Wednesdays, I am always looking for a game any time during the rest of the week.”
|
I also had a great fourball with Iain Stringer, Sander Haar and Barry Jones in which Ian Stringer and I won on the 17th due to some great play from him off his 8 handicap! |

Here is an intro from Iain Stringer:
“I joined West Hill in the Summer and have thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful golf course and meeting and playing with some of the fantastic members who have made me feel very welcome. I decided to become a student at age 55, am studying History at Royal Holloway University of London, and can thoroughly recommend it, beats the world of pensions any day.
Also, just started a private catering business for a bit of fun. Still ambitious on the golf course and looking to improve particularly during my 4-month Summer holiday.”

Here is an intro from Sander:
“Having joined West Hill GC this year in July, I have already met and played with quite a few of you. The course, the club, the staff and members have been all I wished for and hoped to find. Changing golf clubs is always a bit daunting and at West Hill, this is just made so much easier by the way the club is organised and the warm welcome I have experienced on and off the course. A big ‘Thank You’ to all of you for this. Unfortunately, work still gets in the way of golf and pretty much confines me to playing at weekends only. I do try and play both of those days, though, and if you are ever a player short at the weekend, do let me know. I am, usually, quite easy to spot…a mile off, as you may have noticed that I happen to have this, ever so slight, affinity for the colour orange. And who knew there are at least 50 shades of orange as well? I look forward to meeting and playing with all of you in due course”
Here is an intro from Barry:
"I joined West Hill in the summer after moving to Pirbright earlier this year. I've had a two-year break from golf whilst working in Denmark and Poland but previously played at Reigate Heath where I was lucky enough to be Captain in 2015, playing a lot of golf with the Head Pro (ex-West Hill assistant) Clifford Gough. Choosing which of the 3Ws was an easy decision, I love the course and Cliff and Ozzie told me how friendly and welcoming the members are, which is definitely true. I've already played in one match and am trying to play as many competitions as possible. I'd like to play more but work (I build submarines!) gets in the way. I'm currently serving my time a restricted member so if you want an afternoon game, ping me an e-mail!." |
Please be sure to introduce yourselves to Simon, Jonathan, Iain, Sander and Barry when you see them at the club and feel free to invite them for a game. |
West Hill Members on Tour Report from Rod Curry
“Rod Curry, Nick Millar, Brian Morris, Nick Taylor and our recently turned professional, Callum Mackay, were joined by three guests from the Army GC, Leckford and Littlehampton and were on the Costa del Sol last weekend. They played Santana, San Roque (a match against the Club hosted by the San Roque Captain and ex European PGA professional, David Steele), Marbella Club Golf Resort and La Quinta.
The West Hill team were soundly beaten by San Roque, but the individual competition was settled by the final putt on the final hole at La Quinta with Callum losing on countback to Brian Morris. All the courses were in fantastic condition and Callum coped well playing off +7 from the start. Good luck at Q school in La Cala this week! Brian, the Tour leader’s shirt is yours for at least one round in 2020…” |

Pearson Match vs Bramley GC Report from Pearson Trophy Captain, Jane Kimber
“I am absolutely thrilled to report the results of the Pearson match which was played away yesterday at Bramley GC. The West Hill team won five matches out of the seven played, a fantastic result. Thank you to Ilsa Bellion, Janet Lea, Lynne Daniel, Liz Hooper, Helen Simmons, Shirley Couzens and Val Owen, you are all amazing. Our next match is due to be played at Royal Mid Surrey on Thursday, 16 January.” |
Hard work is paying off
Well done to Helen Simmons who had a playing lesson with Greg and then went out two days later and won the Weekday Stableford by four clear points with 38. Second was Jan Gilkes, with Kathryn McKimmie finishing third. Then, on Sunday all of Val Owen’s coaching paid off with a win with 35 points. Second was Liz Hooper, one behind with Shirley Couzens finishing third with 31 points. Well done ladies. |
