Hello Golfers,
Coaching News
Billy Sutcliffe

Billy Sutcliffe was the first member to have a coaching session with me following lockdown and what an unbelievable improvement in one session. Billy's left-hand grip had crept too high into the palm of his left hand. This one thing was preventing his wrists from swinging freely under the club in the backswing so he was having to lift his right arm instead to compensate causing the tilted position in the left photo.

In these downswing pictures, you can see how Billy's tilted backswing position had led to a casting of the clubhead with "dead legs". However, in the right-hand photo, the correctly coiled backswing has led to great use of the legs in the downswing combined with lots of stored up power in the wrists and forearms.

An amazing improvement from one simple grip change!

Alistair McQuater

Alistair McQuater was really struggling for consistency with his putting stroke. As you can see in the right-hand picture his posture had become very cramped with his hands very close to his thighs. This lack of space was causing his hands to become too active in the stroke.

All we had to do was create a framework in his body position to give him space to be able to rock freely from his shoulders (left-hand photo). This felt incredibly upright to Alistair but seeing how good it looked on video helped him to commit to the improved position and to build a much more consistent stroke with less moving parts.

Greg Mackay hits the occasional pull shot left or weaker shot fading right. This was due to the hight right elbow (right-hand picture) causing too steep a downswing. All we had to do to give him a great position in the left-hand picture was to change his sequence of movement in the backswing.

In the old position, he was turning from the hips in the takeaway - halfway back the body could not turn any further so the arms had to lift. In the new position (left photo) the hips and thighs have resisted in the takeaway and are pulled into action as the body continues to turn and coil in the second half of the backswing.

Everyone can do this - it just takes some slow-motion practice swings to feel which parts of the body move first to start the swing.
