Congratulations

Ellen Yates scored a very rare feat when she made her second career albatross. Last year she achieved her first in the R & A U16 Championship at Fulford GC and then yesterday she holed out for a 2 on our 5th hole with a 5-wood from the tee and a 4-hybrid second shot - wow!

Fitting centre update

Iain Purves came for a fitting for the new Callaway Mavrik 3-wood as he was not getting on with his old PING 3-wood. It went so well that he tried the Mavrik driver too. This driver turned a high right shape with his old PING driver into a consistent draw with the latest Callaway.

We have a TaylorMade Fitting Day on Thursday 11th June from 11am to 4pm. All of the appointments with Sam Day, who fits all the top players on the European Tour have been filled. However, I can still do the fittings alongside him with his massive selection of equipment and his advise if I need it. Dan Ingle

Dan Ingle is just back from injury and came for coaching looking for more consistent direction. as you can see in the right picture the hips have not turned through so the hands and arms have overtaken the body causing this narrow follow through with the clubhead scooping upward through impact.

In the left picture, the right knee has turned inward towards the left knee allowing the hips to tun beautifully through impact creating a much straighter shot and a better strike. One simple improvement!

Paul Matravers

Paul Matravers plays off 11 and is looking for more consistency as his bad shot could go either way. In the right picture look how his hands have lifted away from his body. This is always a sign of the wrists moving independently in the take away and the bowing action then takes the clubhead too far behind the body.

In the left picture he has rotated clubhead, forearms and chest together creating a much more connected movement. The result was less moving parts, much better balance to the finish and a consistent draw.

It starts with a UK Swing

Since our last newsletter, Rory McIlroy – the number one ranked golfer in the world – has said he “had a hunch” that September’s Ryder Cup will be postponed.

Whilst no decision has been made, the European Tour has confirmed it'll be returning 'behind closed doors' in July. The first event will be the British Masters at Close House; the first of six consecutive tournaments on British soil.

Who knows, maybe by the time the second UK Swing comes around in October – Dunhill Links, Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship – things may look a little different.

Thoughts for the course

Chipping is a fine art. It requires precision and skill, both of which may need sharpening after a few months away from the golf course. No shame in that! So, here are a couple of points to remember.

Landing Spots

Don’t focus on the hole. Instead, pick out a spot – a patch of grass on the green – to land your ball on. Consider how the slope and speed of the green, the lie of the ball and the club you choose may affect where the ball finishes after landing.

Practise makes perfect

When on the chipping green, place a towel on your landing spot (as seen in the above image) and take aim. As you get the hang of it, you can fold the towel to give yourself a smaller, more challenging target to work with.
