This week's newsletter is special because it is one big Matt's Corner. With Guy on Holiday, I have taken the reigns of this week's newsletter and packed it full of West Hill news and stories. Some useful topics to help you get the most from your game. We'd encourage you to watch our Video of the Week, which will answer any questions you may have about getting fitted for new clubs. Enjoy the read.

Playing the three W's seems to be some sort of a right of passage for golfers in Surrey, and once you have played them, people instantly ask the same question, how do you rank them? Well, Luke Willett is a PGA pro and has played the three W's, he infact did them all in one day. Luke's aim was not to rank the courses, but to play them in as quick a time as possible. Luke is a speed golfer and ran nine marathons in the lead up to this challenge. He had no transport for the day so ran between each course, covering 20 miles and 54 holes. He shot a 75 at Worplesdon, an 81 with us at West Hill and a 77 at Woking.
As you can see from the images below, he did this all at sunrise and finished before 8:00am.
|
His time you ask? 2 hours 47 minutes. He played all three courses in under 3 hours, that is truly incredible.
Luke has another massive challenged this Saturday in Wales and he is doing all of this for The Golf Foundation. They support junior golf and Luke wants to get young people talking about health and fitness through golf. If you would like to know more information about Luke, or to give a charitable donation then please go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/greatbritishopen. |
Plenty of competitive golf is being played at West Hill and none more so than what we witnessed on Sunday. Our very own Scratch team took on our very impressive Junior section in what was a highly anticipated match. James Elliot captained the Scatch team (Alex Bailey, Paul Hendrick, Callum Denham, Lawrence Courtney, Alistair Wooster and Nick Tottenham) against the Junior team captained by Olly Wooster (Sid Beasley, Lottie Woodham, Ellen Yates, Freddy Wooster, Nathan Woodham and Jaya Wilkinson). Some great swings on show in a match played in fine spirit saw the Juniors secure a hard fought 5-2 victory. Dare I say there might be a few bruised egos on the scratch team after that result. Special thanks to all who participated, including Will Hewitt who supported the juniors and played as a reserve on this occasion. Finally, for the record, Freddy smashed his Dad 5&4. I’ve heard a lot about that this week at home. Well played Freddy.

Covid Cup Final
The final of the Covid Cup was a closely fought battle between Greg Craigen and Richard Wheatley. Both players have played great golf to reach the final but it was Greg who sealed victory on the 17th with a 2&1 victory. |

August Midweek Stableford
Friday was the August Midweek Stableford, and a few people really took advantage of that Friday feeling. Lawrence Courtney was out early and shot a 65 for 40 points, but that was only good enough for third as Iain Stringer beat him on countback for second. The winner with 41 points and hitting a 66 was Rowan Gillespie, showing some good form with the Gold Medal this weekend. Division 2 provided another tie for second on 38 points with Mark Finch just pipping John Botham on countback. They needed a couple more to compete with David Alvis who collected 40 points on his way round to an excellent win. |
A quick reminder
A reminder that this weekend is the Gold Medal, this is one of the premier competitions at West Hill. A 36 hole Scratch event over the weekend with a cut after the first round on Saturday, only the top 30 scores will compete on the Sunday. The field is absolutely stacked this year, with over 90 competitors and 34 players with a handicap of five or less. You will have to play great golf just to make the cut, but to win, excellent golf will be needed. Players will be teeing off from 07:30 - 12:00 on the Saturday and then the final 30 will start at 08:00 on Sunday with the final group going off just before 09:30. If you are looking to keep up with the scores then please follow us on twitter @westhillpro and of course good luck to all those who are playing. |
Would you like a game?
I know that I said that this newsletter was one large Matt's Corner but I wanted to give you a little update on my progress. I played in my last competition at the weekend as an amateur before becoming a pro, it does feel very strange to be saying that, but I will be starting my PGA diploma on the 1st October. I played the Club Championships at the course that I grew up playing, Came Down Golf Club, this is in Dorchester, Dorset. A lovely track set on chalk at the top of the hill with wonderful views of the Dorset countryside. The 18 was orginially laid out by J.H. Taylor before Harry Colt came in and made some changes, it has remained largely unchanged since. |
| Par 3 12th
| A 36 hole competition I started off on the Saturday relatively unsteady being three over after five. But I kept the game together and worked back to finish level par with a 70 and only one off the leader. |
| 5th green | I was targeting a sub 70 on the Sunday to get the win but unfortunately I didn't quite have it. The putter never heated up and I finished with a 72 and two over for the competition, three behind the deserved winner at one under. |
|
So I become a pro with a stella amateur record, my last victory probably being a midweek stableford in 2014. Honestly though, I can't tell you how excited I am with everything that is currently happening, I am constantly learning about golf and finding that the more I learn the more that I love it. I am still extremely keen to get on the course and have a round with you, I am free most Monday's and Tuesday's so if you would like to play a round with me then please come into the pro shop say hello and we will look to organise a game. |
Women's Open
The professional golf calender has been changed quite considerable this year in the UK, but this weekend we get to see some links golf! The biggest tournament in the UK this year will be the Women's Open and it begins today at Royal Troon. It should be an excellent competition with a very competitive field on a magnificent course, and in my opinion links golf is the best! |
| Postage Stamp
| The Rose Ladies Series events were extremely successful and last weeks' Scottish Open at Renaissance Club had a great field. It was won by American Stacey Lewis, she is one of 40 American's that have made the trip over. |
| Royal Troon 18th green | Plenty of British golfers are in the field with 2018 Open winner Georgia Hall looking to add a second Open victory. I am excited to watch the action unfold with the very best playing the truest version of golf. |

It's about to get interesting The Northern Trust begins this week, marking the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs on the PGA Tour. The event, held at TPC Boston, will be followed by the BMW Championship before culminating in Atlanta at The Tour Championship. It’s a hell of a payday for the winner ($15 million), as well as a lot of prestige; joining a list of golf’s modern greats. Justin Thomas has already wrapped-up the $2 million Wyndham Rewards prize for the best regular-season player, with PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa finishing second. Thomas will be hoping to join Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as the only players to win the FedEx Cup multiple times (both have won it twice), but it won’t be easy. |
