Beat the Pro Challenge

I am looking forward to seeing many of you on Captain's Day on Saturday. As the format is in fours this year, I will be taking on everyone in the "Beat The Pro Challenge" on the 4th hole. To avoid handling cash, could you please place your bets by going to see Mollie in the shop with your debit/credit card before you tee off.

For those of you who haven't participated before this is a no lose bet. Whatever sum of money you give us (limit of £200) this will be credited to your account and you cannot lose it. I will hit a tee shot with every group on the 4th (for six and a half hours!) and if you hit the green closer than my tee shot then I will doble the credit you have placed on your account*

Captain & Pro Challenge

The Pro, the Captain, Brian Morris and Anthony Mills

Last Friday, the Captain and Pro had a foursomes challenge from Brian Morris and Anthony Mills playing his first ever Captain/Pro Challenge. The Course Manager must have known because he set up two perfect "Sucker Pins mate" especially for Anthony on 7 and 13. The Captain and Pro were 1UP with two to play but Brian accurately threaded his second on 17 along the path and through the cross heather, Anthony hit a great approach from 170 yards to 25 feet and Brian holed for the birdie to square the match. However, after Anthony rolled a fast downhill putt stone dead from 45 feet on the last for a five, the Captain stood up to the pressure and struck a 30 footer perfectly to the holeside to record a par and a one up victory.

This Sunday we have young guns Zach Chew and Ross Tonna Barthet to contend with.

Luke Smith, Matt, Martin Nichols and me

Yesterday I played a friendly fourball with Luke Smith, Martin Nichols and Matt who was playing his first game as a professional after signing his papers with the PGA this week. Luke, who is Kevin Barkham's nephew, joined a year ago and Martin joined just six weeks ago. We had a great match, at 2DN with three to play, I birdied 16 and 17 but Martin holed from over 30 feet to halve 17 in birdie and then holed a pressure five footer at the last for another half to give him and Matt a one up victory over myself and Luke.

Club Stableford & Bank Holiday Mixed Foursomes

Congratulations to Jonathan Hewett who won the Club Stableford on Sunday with 36 points pipping Nigel O'Hagan and Craig Kimber on countback - and yes you guessed it, Jonathan was playing with his newly fitted PXG driver and putter. It was a good day for the Kimber family as Craig's son, Evan, also won Division 2 with 35 points. Second was Alistair Campbell beating Dave Roberts on countback with 34 points.

Then on Monday Jon and Ellen Yates won the Bank Holiday Mixed Foursomes with 42 points. Second were Kevin & Tina Thomas beating Tom & Ann Passmore on countback with 41 points.

Ireland vs South Africa

Last Friday afternoon saw the annual clash of the Ireland v South Africa teams. After a keenly contested match, Ireland were victorious by a 4.5 to 2.5 margin to regain the Celtic Cup. Victory was suitably celebrated afterwards in great spirit by both teams and next year is eagerly awaited with threats of revenge for a contest that started in 2003.

Captains' Day & Weekend Medal

Yesterday was Ladies' Captain's Day and Elaine Watts was blessed with a lovely morning for her golf. The theme was "The Olympics" and I saw some amazing fancy dress outfits. I look forward to receiving the reports and the photographs to share with everyone next week!

Well done to Jaya Wilkinson who won the Weekend Medal with a nett 70 and was cut from 9 to 8. Second was Liz Hooper with nett 73 and third Ellen Yates with nett 75.

Top two showdown

What better way to finish a PGA Tour event than a shoot-out between the world’s top two players?

Dustin Johnson, World No. 1, needed to nail a winding 43-foot putt over a ridge on the final hole to force a playoff… And he did. The putt lasted an incredible 10 seconds.

World No. 2 Jon Rahm must’ve felt sick heading out for the first playoff hole. If he did, he hid it well. The Spaniard made DJ’s miracle putt look mediocre as he sunk one from 66-feet for victory. That’s what I call pinch-yourself golf!
