Swing studio

Swing Studio News

Greg Gould came for an iron fitting. We use the Mizuno DNA swing analyser because it measures exactly how each golfer loads the shaft in the swing and calculates the perfect shaft for your swing.

Measuring every shot with the Flightscope we found that Greg hit the Mizuno JPX Forged with an XP115 S300 soft stepped shaft further and straighter than any other club.

Warwick Taylor also had a fitting this week and once we found the correct shaft using the Mizuno DNA system he gained several yards as well as greater consistency.

Remember we are offering free fittings for October and November in the swing studio so come and compare your clubs to the latest technology now.

Greg and Ashley also undertook some training this week about the new Titleist AP1 and AP2 irons. Here are their certificates.

Read Ashley's article below about the new Taylor Made R1 hybrid and click here to get in contact and book a time to try any of the new Tiltleist, Mizuno or Taylor Made irons or woods.

Continuing the M1 Buzz…

The new TaylorMade M1 Hybrids. What do we know?

We know that this brand new hybrid design has been shaped slightly differently to previous models, allowing us to increase playability from a range of lies. The similarities this club shares with the new Adams hybrids are obvious to see, with a sharper toe section helping to work those difficult ball flights. The speed pocket design protects ball speed for on & off centre hits.

"More of a driving Iron than a rescue club." D. Osbourn

True! This club not only allows a player to play the ball from tight fairway lies, but the improved playability increases performance from tougher areas as well.  Don't just save your scores, improve them! The Hybrid itself comes with two interchangeable weighting areas as shown on the attached picture. On deciding where to place these weights on the sole of the club depends on your preference of what shot shape you enjoy hitting.

What's the importance of Club Gapping?

These clubs come in four different loft choices: 2 (17º), 3 (19º), 4 (21º), 5 (24º). Let's not forget, these hybrids are all that sits between your irons and woods. Don't allow yourself to be caught short as the air temperature drops, so will shot distance. Gap that weakness and make it a strength this winter! Get your own personal recommendation. Pros news

Hello from Quinta de Lago

As you read this I will be at a four day pro/am at Quinta de Lago organised by the PGA's of Europe and the Eligo Club. I was invited by former West Hill member, Simon Jones, and will also see David and Maureen Haigh and maybe Ray Kirby for a curry whilst I'm there!!! Fingers crossed I can hole some putts and come home with the 10,000 first prize!!! See you on Sunday!!!

Members news

New Captain

Congratulations to David Alvis who has started his term as Club Captain, and to Marjorie Horsman who is now Ladies' Captain.

I'm sure you will also all join me in thanking Andrew Smith and Cilla Shaw for their year in office as well as thanking retiring Chaiman, John McKimmie, and retiring board member Derek Plumstead for all their time and commitment.

Congratulations also to new board members Sian Thomas, Mark Turner and John Todd and to new Chairman, Alan Arscott.

Buchanan Trophy

Well done to new member, Simon Calder and Barry Goss who won the Buchanan Trophy on Sunday pipping Paul Reeves and Mark Turner on countback with 39 points. Third also on countback with 38 points were Chris Smith ( following his coaching this week!) and Nick Taylor

Simon made a very good winners speech in which he said how pleased he is to have joined such a great club with a fantastic course and that he can sense the strong feeling of how all the members love the club.

Weekday Stableford

Ed came for a coaching session the previous week and then last Friday he won the Weekday Stableford with 38 points. Look how we massively improved his swing plane in one session which gave him far more consistency of direction.

Second on countback was Julien Payne (are you going to book a bunker lesson with me Julien??!!) and third with 35 points Gerry Kennedy.

Andrew Smith's final captain's roll up

by Brian Terry

'The final Captain's Roll-up competition during Andrew Smith's captaincy year was held on Wednesday, 21 October. Despite the players having to endure the only rainy day over the last two weeks the event was played with its usual combination of keen competition and a strong element of enjoyable, social golf followed by a superb lunch. Neil Blick won with 36 points for his second win over the last twelve months which increased his eclectic points total to 19 and this was enough to put him in joint third place overall.

Second on the day was Rod Curry with 34 points and third was Kamran Etebar with 33 points. Bearing in mind the conditions these were all excellent scores. Entering this last event the leader in the eclectic points was Chris Barber who had 22 points (only three short of the maximum after recording three wins, a second and a third) followed by Simon Legge with 19 points.

Had Simon won last week he would have taken the trophy as long as Chris did not score any points but if he had been second then, as long as Chris did not add to his total, they would have tied. With Chris not able to play last week Simon was still in with a good chance of retaining the trophy but the best he could achieve was fifth in the monthly competition on countback. So, congratulations to Chris on his success in his first year of entering the competition. Simon has now been in the top three in the last three years with one outright win to his name.

UK Seniors event at West Hill

Congratulations to John Watts who played in The UK Seniors two day event at West Hill last week.

In a field of over 60 competitors he shot gross scores of 76 and 78 to win the handicap prize playing off 8.

Ladies news

Bushell Statuette

Congratulations to Ruth Mackay who won the final of the Bushell Statuette the Friday before last against Jane Kimber. It was a very close match with Ruth 1 up on the 18th, then sinking her putt to halve the hole and win the match. She is the first academy lady to win a board competition !! Well done Ruth !!

Well done also to Laura Murphy who won the Ladies 5 club AGM cup with 36 pts. Second was Chris Elliott with 34 points and third Jan Gilkes with 31 pts.
