Vokey SM11 have arrived, the name isn't exciting, what about the look?

People ask, "How different can they make a wedge?" Valid question, wedges have not drastically changed, why should you look at new wedges this year? I ask one question: when did you last have new wedges?

How many of you are still gaming that old trusty wedge from a few years ago, maybe even older? You may be comfortable with it, and it gets the job done — maybe. But have you ever wondered how it actually affects your game? Could you really shoot lower scores with a new set of wedges?

Titleist have tested wedges and found that the performance of wedges have measurable decline between 75-125 rounds. With the West Hill active members, that could be a few months in summer. The spin rate drops and the launch increases, which results in two key changes to your performance:

1. Ball rollout on the green will more than double. With the ball releasing further on the green your ability to hit it next to the pin or keep the ball on the green is significantly hampered.

2. Variable carry distances. With the changes in spin and launch, the inconsistency of carry distances will be greater as you will become more susceptible to the flyer when the ball carries much further, or when it rolls up the face and launches into the air rather than forward and not carrying anywhere near far enough.

I tested this with Sam and his old wedges; the data shows real inconsistency with his old wedge:

Vokey's new wedges are designed to improve your contact, ball flight and spin.

With the variety SM11 of grinds, they have a club that will help you strike the ball between the 2-5 grooves on the face, finding the sweetspot. The improved progressive CG lowers the ball flight so that you can control the distance better. Deeper, more precise grooves help to keep spin high no matter the lie.

How old are your wedges? Have they been used for more than 100 rounds?

Want greater control with your wedges? Then it might be time to look at some new ones.
